瑞典皇家工学院1827年建院，是瑞典最大、最古老的六所技术类高等院校之一，也是一所国际性的高等教育机构，与世界上多所大学和学院建立了研究和教育关系。为瑞典1/3的工业生产提供工程技术教育和研究，培养了占全国1/3的理学学士和硕士工程师。致力于自然科学各个学科（如：建筑、产业经济、城市规划、环境技术等）的教学和科研，也设继续教育，尤其在信息交流和生物技术领域有自己的专长。
该学院在斯德哥尔摩地区有四个校区, 主校区在斯德哥尔摩的中心地区，乘地铁或者机场巴士都能到达。在主校区的北面，南面和西南还有三个校区，相距都不是太远。目前学院拥有11,000多名在校生，1, 500多名研究生和3, 100多名教职工（其中教授198名，高级讲师234名）。
